Parents,
Happy 100th (kind of) day! Ask your lovely students for more info. Turns out, we’ve been celebrating the 100th
day on day 101. Oops! Still a fun day in
the end. J
Because of the 100th day celebration, there are
no homework items coming home tonight.
This includes no word card requirements for the FF. Tomorrow will resume as usual, and we’ll pick
up FF with the final 1 minute read. It’s
the last year of 100th day celebration for these kids. Another “graduation” of sorts into “big kid”
zone.
Theme tests last week went very well. The assessment packets and a copy of the
grading sheet will come home Friday in the badger folders. Overall, I was very pleased. It was a difficult theme with the possessives
and a review of various suffix rules.

February 11 is our second grade concert. See you there!
February 14 is our Valentine’s Day party. Valentine boxes are created at home, and
should only be brought in the day of the party, please. Unfortunately, I do not have room to store
all the boxes. If a student plans to
hand out Valentines, there must be a Valentine for ALL members of our
class. I encourage you to have your
children write their name only on the Valentine, and not distinguish
classmates. It takes less time away from
the party activities if the students do not have to find specific boxes to
stuff. Mrs. McGavock and Mrs. Samuelson
will provide information soon. Thank you
to all families for returned volunteer sheets so promptly.
Next week we will begin research on the Presidents to
conduct our own Presidential Wax Museum. Our museum performance will be Feb. 17 at
1:45. I will be sending information
concerning costuming next week. Please
mark your calendars now for the upcoming performance. There is just about nothing cuter than a 7
year old dressed like a President. If
you are not able to attend many school related events due to a hectic work
schedule, please consider prioritizing this- the kids work extremely hard and
the results are quite stellar. Stay
tuned for more info!
Parent/Teacher conferences are Feb. 19-20. The staff will schedule conferences next week
after preference sheets are sent. Please
begin to look at your schedule these two days to be prepared. No school Feb. 20-21.
Basic facts continue to be a heavy focus for our class. Continue practice in this area, as well as on
subtraction regrouping problems. We will
test in math over subtraction regrouping next Wednesday.
Science test Friday.
The kids will come home with a study packet Thursday. This chapter deals with land changes and natural
resources. (Yes, that sounds familiar because
our last Social Studies chapter was very similar.) Our next chapter will address weather.
We continue to look at the economy in Social Studies. The kids are learning the difference between
goods and services, trading and bartering, and the steps to making a decision.
We’re involved in a wide variety of writing projects right
now. We’re writing a piece in
conjunction with our 100th day celebration about being 100 years
old, we’re still working on some expository writing about a past memory, and
the kids are also using some time during our guided reading rotations to show
me what they’ve got, working through the writing process independently on an “interest
story” of their own desiring. Very
thrilling improvements for many in this curricular area.
Things are progressing along very nicely. We’ve been highly motivated by earning time
with our student created “objects of awesomeness” (ask the kids!) which has been extremely entertaining for
me. Let me just tell you I have a lot of
talented crazy loom artists, but goodness me, Thea takes the cake in this
category! J
